Giovanna Becerra

Giovanna Becerra is an Ecuadorian-American interdisciplinary artist and researcher based in New York, whose practice embodies decolonial resistance through cultural memory and material activism. With dual degrees in Sculpture and Anthropology from SUNY Purchase, she integrates ethnographic research with embodied artistic practice. As a recipient of the El Orgullo Award for promoting Latin community engagement and a published writer in Nowscape, her work reflects a commitment to cultural advocacy and critical scholarship.

Becerra's practice exists at the intersection of affect theory, feminist critique, and Ecuadorian cosmological beliefs, examining how communal celebrations transform historical trauma into expressions of collective joy and resistance. Her investigations of Ecuadorian festival traditions, particularly the Diablada Píllareña, explore how these festivities embody radical resistance against colonial hierarchies. Through material experimentation with both permanent and impermanent mediums, she uses impermanence as politics, mirroring the fragility and resilience of oral tradition.

Her work incorporates traditional craft methodologies alongside contemporary approaches, challenging hierarchies between artisan and artist while addressing labor politics and cultural misattribution. Drawing from her bicultural background and everyday Ecuadorian spiritual practices, she positions cultural memory and political resistance as inseparable from the body, ritual, and community practice.
